Homework survival prompts

When the workload piles up, the honest move is not to make AI do the work for you - it is to use AI to break the mountain into steps you can actually climb. These prompts help you plan, focus, and get unstuck while keeping every bit of the thinking, and the grade, yours.

Break down the work

Turn it into a step list

Here is my assignment: [paste the full assignment or rubric]. Break it into a numbered list of concrete steps I can do in order, from first to last. For each step, say what "done" looks like. Do not do any of the steps for me - I want the plan, not the work.

Why it works: A vague assignment feels impossible until it becomes a short list of small, obvious moves.

Decode a confusing prompt

I do not fully understand what this assignment is asking for: [paste the prompt]. In plain language, tell me what my teacher actually wants, what the key verbs (like analyze, compare, argue) require me to do, and any hidden requirements I might miss. Then list 3 questions I should ask my teacher if I am still unsure.

Why it works: Half of a bad grade comes from answering a question you misread, not from weak effort.

Estimate how long it takes

Here are the steps for my assignment: [paste your step list]. Give me a realistic time estimate for each step in minutes, assuming I am an average [grade level] student. Flag which steps usually take longer than people expect, and total it up so I know how many sessions to plan.

Why it works: Knowing a task is 90 minutes and not "forever" makes it much easier to just start.

Plan and focus

Build my study week

Here are my deadlines: [list each assignment, class, and due date]. I can study on these days and times: [your real availability]. Build me a realistic day-by-day plan for the week that front-loads the hardest work, leaves buffer before each deadline, and never schedules more than [X] hours in one day. Keep it simple enough that I will actually follow it.

Why it works: A plan built around your real calendar beats a perfect plan you cannot keep.

Beat the blank page

I am procrastinating on [assignment] because it feels overwhelming. Give me the single smallest first step I can finish in under 5 minutes to get moving - something so easy it feels almost silly. Then tell me the next tiny step after that. Do not lecture me about time management.

Why it works: Momentum starts with one absurdly small action, not with a burst of motivation.

Plan a 25-minute session

I have one 25-minute block to work on [assignment]. Given where I am right now ([describe what you have done so far]), tell me the most useful thing to focus on for these 25 minutes and what I should aim to have finished by the end. Give me a 2-line focus goal I can keep on screen.

Why it works: A short block with one clear target gets more done than an open-ended plan to study all night.

Get unstuck honestly

Tutor that makes me try first

Be my tutor for [subject and topic]. House rule: never give me the final answer until I have made a genuine attempt. When I am stuck, ask me a guiding question or give me a hint, then wait for my response. If I ask you to just tell me the answer, remind me of this rule and give me a smaller hint instead. Start by asking what I am working on.

Why it works: Hints keep the learning yours, so the understanding is still there on test day when AI is not.

Check my understanding

I think I understand [concept], but I want to be sure before I use it in my assignment. Here is my explanation in my own words: [write your understanding]. Point out anything I got wrong or left out, rate how solid my grasp is from 1 to 10, and ask me one question that would expose a gap if I have one. Do not rewrite it for me.

Why it works: Explaining it back in your own words is the fastest way to find the shaky spot before it costs you marks.
