Math and science check prompts

Stuck on a problem and not sure where it slipped? These prompts turn any AI into a patient tutor that shows you the first wrong step, explains the method behind it, and gives you fresh problems to practice - all without spoiling the answer.

These prompts are for learning your own coursework, not for getting answers to a live test, quiz, or exam you are being graded on.

Find my mistake

First wrong step only

Here is a problem and my full attempt: [paste the problem, then paste every step of your work]. Do not give me the final answer. Find the first step where I go wrong, tell me what kind of error it is (algebra, sign, formula, arithmetic), and ask me one question that nudges me toward the fix. Stop there and wait for my reply.

Why it works: Fixing the earliest error usually clears up everything downstream on its own.

Check my units and setup

Here is a word problem and how I set it up: [paste the problem and your equation or diagram, with units]. Before I solve it, check only my setup: are the units consistent, did I convert correctly, and does the equation match what the problem is actually asking? Point out any mismatch but do not solve it for me.

Why it works: Most science mistakes are baked into the setup long before the arithmetic starts.

Is my approach worth grinding?

Here is a problem and the method I plan to use: [paste the problem and describe your intended approach in a sentence or two]. Do not solve it. Just tell me whether this approach will actually get to the answer, and if not, what general strategy would fit better - without revealing the steps or the result.

Why it works: A two minute sanity check beats twenty minutes down a dead end.

Understand the method

Explain it with one worked example

Explain this concept to me from scratch as if I am seeing it for the first time: [name the concept or paste the formula]. Give the plain-English idea first, then walk through one worked example that is NOT my homework problem so I still have to do mine myself. Keep it short and check my understanding with a quick question at the end.

Why it works: A neutral example teaches the pattern without doing your actual assignment for you.

Why does this step work?

In this method I keep memorizing without understanding: [paste the step or rule, for example "flip and multiply when dividing fractions" or "why we set the derivative to zero"]. Explain WHY that step works - the reasoning underneath it - not just when to do it. Use a simple analogy if it helps.

Why it works: Understanding the reason means you can rebuild the step even when you forget it.

Practice without answers

Problems at my level, answers hidden

Generate 5 practice problems on this topic: [name the topic] at a [beginner / intermediate / advanced] level. Do NOT show any answers yet. I will attempt them and paste my work back to you. Only then, check each one and tell me where I went wrong without simply stating the correct final answer.

Why it works: Withholding the key forces a real attempt, which is where the learning happens.

Quiz me one question at a time

Act as a spaced-review tutor for this material: [paste your notes, formulas, or topic list]. Ask me ONE question at a time and wait for my answer. If I get it right, move to a slightly harder one; if I miss it, ask an easier follow-up on the same idea before moving on. Do not dump all the questions or answers at once.

Why it works: One question at a time with feedback mimics how tutors actually build recall.
