    Stop describing, start referencing

Words are a slot machine. An image reference is a leash. The moment you paste an --oref URL you quit begging the model to imagine your character and start telling it exactly who to render.

a woman on a rooftop at dusk --oref https://your-image-url --ow 150
  2. 02

The reference has a memory limit

Omni Reference holds the face, the vibe, the silhouette. It drops the freckles, the tattoo, the logo on the jacket. Anything tiny and specific lives in your text, never in the image.

...a small red star logo on the cap, faint freckles across the nose --oref https://your-image-url

Every reference is a GPU tax

--oref runs at 2x GPU time. Your fast hours drain twice as fast the second you switch it on. Explore in plain prompts, then spend the reference only on the hero frames.

  4. 04

Turn it up and it turns to wax

--ow defaults to 100 and climbs to 1000. Push past 400 and your character stops being a person and becomes a wax figure - stiff, shiny, dead-eyed. Keep it low unless your stylize is cranked high.

    --oref https://your-image-url --ow 200
  5. 05

Say the style twice or lose it

When you fight the reference for a new aesthetic, the model forgets your style words halfway through the read. Plant them at the START and the END of the prompt so they survive the whole trip.

oil painting, a knight in a foggy forest --oref https://your-image-url, loose visible brushstrokes, oil painting

    Quality 4 kills your reference

--q 4 and Omni Reference cannot ride together. Some jobs auto-switch to quality 4 and silently ignore your --oref. If the character vanished, check your quality setting before you blame your prompt.

  7. 07

    Same face, brand new outfit

Drop the character weight to --cw 30 and Midjourney keeps the face but lets go of the clothes and hair. That is how you put your hero in a tux one frame and a spacesuit the next.

    --cref https://your-image-url --cw 30
  8. 08

One style across the whole batch

--sw 300 clamps a style reference down hard, so ten images come out looking like one artist made them in one sitting. Lock it once and stop babysitting consistency across a set.

    --sref https://your-style-url --sw 300
  9. 09

Draft mode is cheap until it is not

Draft Mode hands you fast, cheap iterations to nail composition. It flat out will not run with Omni Reference. Compose in Draft, then flip to the real engine for the character passes.

  10. 10

    Two characters, one reference

Do not stack two --oref images fighting over the frame. Feed one photo with both people already in it and name who is who in text. The model holds a group far better than a tug-of-war.

the woman in red on the left, the man in grey on the right --oref https://group-photo-url
  11. 11

When style and face collide, drop the weight

Stack --oref for the person and --sref for the art direction and they wrestle each other. If the style keeps losing, lower your --ow so the character stops hogging the entire render.

    --oref https://person-url --sref https://style-url --ow 100
  12. 12

To edit a region, drop the reference

Vary Region, Pan, and Zoom Out refuse to work while --oref is attached. Send the image to the Editor and strip out --oref and --ow first, then paint your fix cleanly.

  13. 13

Consistency is a sheet, not a prayer

Before scene one, build a turnaround character sheet - same person, front, side, back, neutral background. That single sheet becomes your --oref for every frame after. You forge the character once, then they walk into any story you write.

character turnaround sheet, front side and back views, neutral grey background --ar 3:2
