Turn Your Notes Into a Study Machine

Pick one thing you actually need to learn, feed it to NotebookLM, and build a study set that quizzes you and reads back like a podcast.

    Do not pick 'everything.' Pick one real thing you have to learn soon.

    Maybe it is 'photosynthesis,' 'the causes of World War 1,' or 'how to multiply fractions.'

    The tighter you pick, the smarter your machine gets.

    A machine you care about beats a machine you are forced to use.

    Why does learning this actually matter to you? A test Friday? You are curious? You want to beat your own last score?

    List the sources you will feed it

    A 'source' is any stuff that teaches your topic: your class notes, a textbook page, a PDF, a YouTube link, an article.

    NotebookLM only learns from what YOU give it, so it stays honest to your material - it will not make stuff up from the whole internet.

    List 2 or 3 sources you can actually get your hands on.

    Type them as a short list, like: my bio notes, chapter 4 PDF, the Khan Academy video.

    Open NotebookLM and make a notebook

    Time to build the machine. Open NotebookLM in a new tab.

    Sign in with a Google account (ask a parent or teacher if you need one).

    Click 'Create new' or 'New notebook' to start an empty notebook.

    Type DONE once you see a blank notebook waiting for sources.

    Feed your sources into the machine

    Click 'Add source' and load in the sources you listed. You can paste text, upload a PDF, or drop a link.

    Add at least 2 so the machine has enough to teach you from.

    Wait a few seconds - NotebookLM reads every word so it can answer only from your stuff.

    Type how many sources you added, like: I added 3 sources.

    Make the machine quiz you (paste this)

    Now make it work for YOU. In the chat box inside your notebook, paste the expert prompt below.

    It tells NotebookLM to act like a patient tutor and quiz you one question at a time.

    Read its first question. Then, in this box, type that first question so you keep a record of it.

    This becomes question 1 of your study set.

    what will really happen

    NotebookLM answers only from YOUR sources, so it will not wander off-topic.

    Its first questions can be too easy or stick to surface facts.

    It can still misread a note, so check its answer against your source.

    You are my patient study tutor. Use ONLY the sources in this notebook. My topic is [topic] and it matters to me because [why]. Quiz me with one clear question at a time, starting easy and getting harder. After each answer I give, tell me if I am right, fix any mistake using the sources, and cite which source it came from.     Answer question 2, then keep the quiz rolling until you have 5 total questions.

    Pick the 3 that felt HARDEST - those are the ones worth mastering.

    One more hard one. Look back at your quiz and grab another question that made you pause.

    If the machine has not asked enough, tell it: 'Ask me 2 harder questions about [topic].'

    Then think: across all 5, which one did you keep getting wrong or feel shaky on?

    That shaky part is your weak spot - the exact thing to hit again.

    Make an audio overview and name your weak spot

    Find the 'Audio Overview' button (it may say 'Generate' or sit in the Studio panel). Click it.

    NotebookLM turns your sources into a short podcast where two hosts talk through your topic - perfect for learning on the go.

    While it builds, name the one weak spot you found in your quiz.

    Type the exact part you keep getting wrong.

    Compile your study plan

    Last piece: when will you actually listen to your podcast? On the bus? Doing chores? Before bed?
