Run an open AI model

The apps you know are wrappers over models. Open models are free for anyone to run - even on your own laptop, with no company in the middle. Go see for yourself.

    The apps are just the top layer

    ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini - those are apps. Under every app is a <b>model</b>.

    Some models are <b>open</b>: anyone can download them, run them, and build with them for free. That is a different world, and you are about to visit it.

    Meet Hugging Face

    Hugging Face is the giant library of open models. Open it and look around the Models and Spaces tabs.

    Find a model whose name sounds interesting to you.

    Run one in your browser

    A "Space" is a live demo of a model you can try right in the browser - no install.

    Open Spaces, pick one (image maker, chatbot, background remover...), and actually run it.

    what will really happen

    Some Spaces are asleep and take a minute to wake up when you open them. That is normal - it is running on a free shared computer, not a giant company data center.

    Open vs app - what changed?

    With an open model you can see how it works, download it, and run it with no account and no company watching. With an app, you cannot.

    The next level: run it on YOUR computer

    The real power move: run a model on your own machine. No internet needed, nothing sent anywhere. A free tool called Ollama does exactly this.

    <b>Safety first:</b> installing software is a grown-up job. Look at Ollama with a parent, do not install it alone. For now, just plan what you would run.
