Build Your Own Dungeon Master
Design a world, cast a hero, then steer ChatGPT as your own dungeon master through an adventure only you could make.

- Finish the step above first01
Open your game engine
Go to ChatGPT. This is going to be your dungeon master - the voice that runs your whole adventure.
A dungeon master, or DM for short, is the person who describes the world, plays every character, and tells you what happens next. You are about to teach ChatGPT that job.
Log in if you need to, then come back here. We build the game first, and play it after.
Open ChatGPT (new tab) - Finish the step above first02
Name your world
Every adventure needs a place. Not just 'a forest' - YOUR forest, with a real name.
Think big and weird. A city inside a sleeping whale? A school for storm-wizards? Floating iron islands called Ashmoor?
Type the name of your world and what kind of place it is. Make it one nobody else has.
- Finish the step above first03
Set the mood
The same world can feel a hundred different ways. Is it spooky and rainy? Bright and silly? Cold and lonely?
The mood tells your DM how to paint every scene. It is the difference between a giggle and a shiver.
Type the vibe of your world in a few words.
- Finish the step above first04
Name your hero
Now the star of the show: you. Well, the you who lives inside the game.
Give your hero a name that fits your world. It can be brave, funny, or a little strange.
Type your hero's name.
- Finish the step above first05
Say who your hero is
A name is not a person yet. Who is this hero? A shy baker who ran off to be a knight? A robot who just wants to feel rain?
The best heroes want something and fear something. Give yours a little heart.
Type one sentence about who your hero is.
- Finish the step above first06
Give your hero an edge
Every hero needs one special thing. Not ten - one. A power, a skill, or a magic item.
Maybe you can talk to animals. Maybe you carry a sword that hums when danger is near.
Type the one special power or item your hero has.
- Finish the step above first07
Set the big goal
A game with no goal is just wandering around. What are you actually trying to DO?
Find the stolen sun before winter never ends. Free your sister from the glass tower. Win the great sky race.
Type your hero's big goal.
- Finish the step above first08
Put something in the way
A goal is boring if it is easy. Someone or something has to stand in your path.
A frost baron and his glass wolves. A city that lies to you. A curse that eats your memories.
Type the danger or villain blocking your goal.
- Finish the step above first09
Add your own house rule
This is your game, so add one rule that is pure you. Your DM will follow it every single turn.
Silly or serious, your call. 'Every town has a weird snack.' 'The moon talks in riddles.' 'No one ever truly dies.'
Type one house rule for your dungeon master to always obey.
- Finish the step above first10
Hand ChatGPT the job
Time to turn ChatGPT into your DM. Below is an expert pre-prompt - a block of instructions that gives the AI its role and its rules.
Copy the whole thing. Every [bracket] is already filled with your answers. Paste it into ChatGPT and hit send.
Read the opening scene it writes. Then look at your 3 choices, and pick one by typing its number - or type your own move to steer somewhere new.
what will really happenOpen ChatGPT (new tab)ChatGPT will write a full opening scene and 3 choices - a solid first draft, not the finished game.
A chat AI agrees too easily and sounds sure even when it is wrong, so watch it closely.
It sometimes forgets a rule - picking your hero's move for you, or skipping the 3 choices.
You are my expert Dungeon Master, running an endless choose-your-own text adventure built just for me. Follow every rule below. THE WORLD: [world_name]. The mood of this place is [world_vibe]. MY HERO: [hero_name], who is [hero_who]. My hero can [hero_power]. THE QUEST: My goal is [quest_goal]. In my way stands [villain]. MY HOUSE RULE: [house_rule] RULES FOR EVERY TURN: - Write each scene in 3 to 5 vivid sentences. Show it, do not just tell it. - Never choose my hero's actions for me. I decide what my hero does. - End EVERY turn with exactly 3 numbered choices, then the line: or type your own move. - Let my choices matter. I can fail and danger is real, but never dead-end me. - Keep it age-friendly: adventure and tension, no gore. - Remember what happened before and keep one story going. Begin now. Set the opening scene where my quest starts, then give me my first 3 choices. When it drifted or broke a rule, did you steer it back, or just keep the first thing it wrote?

Bake your reusable dungeon master
You just built a whole game engine. Do not lose it. Glunty is stitching your world and hero into one clean, reusable prompt.
Save this text somewhere safe. Any day you want, paste it into a fresh ChatGPT and your world snaps right back to life.
Read it once. This is YOUR dungeon master, built from YOUR choices - not slop that anyone else got.
Do the steps above and your Your reusable dungeon master prompt shows up here.hold on - judge it, do not celebrate- Is this world actually what you pictured, or just the first thing ChatGPT gave you?
- What is the ONE part that feels generic - the villain, the vibe, or a choice it offered?
- What would you change to make the story more YOURS?
- Finish the step above first12
Ship it to the wall
You just directed an AI like a game engine. That is a real skill, and you own it now.
Share your world with the class. Post the name of your world and your hero so everyone can find it.
Drop it on the class wall with #Glunty. Then go play another hour - your quest is waiting.

You are the game master now.
You did not just ask for a story. You built a world, cast a hero, and taught an AI to run the whole thing on your rules, which is the difference between pulling a lever for slop and directing a machine to make something that is truly yours.
the fork in the road
One prompt reads to you. Yours plays back.
The lazy move is typing 'ChatGPT, tell me a story.' You sit back, you read whatever it spits out, and it is the same shape of tale a million other kids just got.
Your dungeon master is different. You built the world. You built the hero. Every single turn the story stops and waits for YOUR choice. Nothing happens until you decide.
That is the whole trick of steering an AI: you do not beg it for an answer, you hand it a role and rules and then you drive.
