The Suno Style Prompt Formula

Learn the 5-part formula that turns two lazy words into a Suno style prompt that is actually yours.

    Start the formula: pick a genre

    Here is the whole secret. A Suno style prompt is just 5 things stacked in the right order: genre + mood + one instrument + a vocal + an era.

    Genre is the family of music - pop, rap, lo-fi, country, house, metal. Pick ONE. Blend three and Suno gets confused and gives you mush.

    Add a mood

    Mood is the feeling you want people to get - dreamy, angry, heartbroken, hyped, cozy, dark.

    One or two words is plenty. This tells Suno how the song should hit you in the chest.

    Pick one star instrument

    Now name ONE instrument that leads the song - a soft piano, a fat synth bass, an acoustic guitar, an 808, a saxophone.

    Just one. The star sound. Pile on too many and Suno smears them into a blur.

    Pick your era (the secret weapon)

    This is the lever almost nobody uses, and it changes EVERYTHING. Pick a decade: 1960s, 1970s, 1980s, 1990s, 2000s, or 2020s.

    A 1980s song and a 2020s song can share every other word and still sound like two different planets - the drums, the voices, the whole vibe shifts.

    Design the voice with a pro

    A great vocal needs three things: who sings it, how they sing it, and the mic sound - like 'raspy male tenor, emotional delivery, dry close-mic'.

    Copy the prompt below and paste it into ChatGPT. It will act like a vocal producer and hand you three voice options built for your picks.

    You are a professional vocal producer who writes Suno voice descriptions. Give me 3 short vocal descriptions for a [genre] song that feels [mood], set in the [era]. Each one must name the singer type (like male tenor or female alto), a delivery (like breathy, powerful, laid-back), and a mic or effect (like dry close-mic, warm reverb, doubled vocals). Keep each under 10 words. No explaining, just the 3 options as a plain list.

    Write your hook

    A hook is the one catchy line people sing back after hearing it just once. It is the heart of the song.

    Write one short line, about 6 to 10 words, that fits your mood. Say it out loud. If it is fun to repeat, it is a hook.

    Stack it - strongest words first

    Two rules make or break a style prompt. One: keep it to about 5 things. Fewer is too random, more than 7 starts fighting itself.

    Two: put the strongest words FIRST. Suno leans hardest on the first 20 to 30 words, so lead with your era and genre.

    Write your style line by hand now, in this order: era, genre, mood, instrument, vocal. Example: '1980s synthpop, neon heartbreak, gated-reverb drums, breathy female alto'.

    Build your Suno recipe

    The structure tags (like Verse and Chorus) tell Suno where each section goes. Your hook repeats in the chorus so it sticks in people's heads.

    Test it in Suno

    Open Suno and start a new song in Custom mode. Paste your Style line into the Style box, and paste the lyrics part (the bit with the Verse and Chorus tags) into the Lyrics box.

    Hit create and listen. Does it match the picture in your head? If not, change ONE thing - usually the era or the vocal - and run it again.

    Suno makes 2 takes each time, and the first one is rarely the keeper - listen to both.

    It may ignore a tag or mumble a word - that is normal, not you doing it wrong.

    Your first try almost never matches the song in your head exactly.
